Avoid using the word "I". Being a team player nowadays is important to most companies. The "I" word implies otherwise and simply does not read well.

Salary Expectations and Negotiations

Most companies nowadays are very concerned about "internal equity" issues … rightfully so. They will not take the risk of paying a recent hire more than their peers. Expect to be paid competitively. If you feel you warrant more money, have a good reason. "I want more money" is not a good reason. Remember, the hiring authority will likely have to make a case to their immediate supervisor.

Do not formally accept an offer until you have all of the details in writing. It is perfectly fine to verbally accept an offer contingent upon seeing all of the details in writing, but you need to leave open the possibility that there may be something in the offer that needs to be modified.

Once an offer is made and you are going through the details, do not "nickel and dime" the company. Write down your areas of concern and approach them with a complete list. Nothing is more irritating than having issues continually popping up; especially after you thought the deal was closed.
